It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Leonard Fernando (4S7LF, OZ6ZV), a long-time and beloved member of the amateur radio community. Leonard passed away peacefully early this morning (17.01.2025) at the age of 87 in Bandarawela. The funeral is expected to take place tomorrow in Bandarawela; further details will be shared soon.

Leonard, fondly known as “Leo,” was a pillar of the amateur radio community, licensed both in Sri Lanka and Denmark. Despite battling illness in recent years, he remained active on the airwaves, checking in on 40 meters and, more notably, being the first to check in daily at 9:00 PM via the Pidurutalagala repeater. In fact, he was heard checking in just last night, demonstrating his unwavering passion for the hobby.

Leo’s contributions to amateur radio are unparalleled. He was instrumental in obtaining the Pidurutalagala repeater for the Radio Society of Sri Lanka (RSSL) from Denmark—a remarkable gift made possible through his close connections with his Danish amateur radio club. His efforts stand as a testament to his dedication to fostering amateur radio in Sri Lanka.

Before returning to Sri Lanka in his later years, Leo was a licensed amateur operator in Denmark for decades. His expertise as an engineer and his generous spirit were evident in how he shared his wealth of knowledge, gear, and components with fellow hams. He was known for his hospitality, warmth, and willingness to help anyone interested in amateur radio.

Leonard’s story is one of inspiration and legacy. From humble beginnings in Moratuwa, where his curiosity led him to the world of ham radio, to a distinguished career in electronics that took him across the globe, he exemplified how passion and perseverance can shape a meaningful life. Even at the age of 86, he actively engaged with scouts, recently conducting a Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) session from his home in Bandarawela, providing young minds with the opportunity to explore the wonders of amateur radio.

Beyond radio, Leonard’s zest for life was evident in his hobbies, including baking and cooking, which brought joy to those around him.

As we bid farewell to Leonard, we remember him not just as a skilled operator but as a kind and generous soul whose contributions have left an indelible mark on the amateur radio community.

“Leonard’s legacy is one of connection, learning, and giving back—a true embodiment of the spirit of amateur radio. His efforts and passion will forever inspire us,”

May Leonard attain the supreme bliss of Nibbana.

We invite all members of the amateur radio community to reflect on Leonard’s life and contributions. Let us honor his memory by continuing his mission of promoting amateur radio as a tool for education, communication, and international friendship.

Further details about the funeral arrangements will follow.
