Spectrum Purity Starts With You: Why Your Radio’s Certification Matters

Every time you key up, you’re borrowing spectrum that belongs to everyone. But what about the radio in your hand — was it built to give it back cleanly? Sri Lanka’s airwaves are a shared resource, and untested, uncertified equipment is one of the quietest threats to it. Here’s what every operator needs to know about radio certification, type approval, and why it matters more than most people realise.
QRP – LOW POWER OPERATION

What can a 3.5-watt transmitter on a single crystal frequency achieve? According to RSSL Secretary Victor 4S7VK, who got his licence 43 years ago today, the answer is 72 countries in 5 months — and a contact 8,000 km away across the Mediterranean. In this post, Victor shares his early days of QRP operation, the patience it demands, and why that one hard-earned contact will always beat a hundred easy ones.
Happy World Amateur Radio Day — 18 April 2026

If you are reading this and wondering whether there is a place for you on the bands, the answer is yes. You do not need an engineering degree. You do not need a tower on the roof. You do not need to already know CW, SDR, or what a Smith chart is. What you need is curiosity and a willingness to learn — the rest is what RSSL is here for.
RSSL concludes a landmark 72nd AGM

The Radio Society of Sri Lanka (RSSL) held its 72nd Annual General Meeting on 22nd March 2026, marking a milestone in the society’s history. With record participation, the AGM elected Ms. Prarthana Liyanage (4S7PL) as President – only the second YL to lead RSSL. Outgoing President Tharanga Premathilake (4S6TMP) was honoured with honorary life membership. A new chapter begins for amateur radio in Sri Lanka.

Cyclone Ditwah: When All Else Failed, Radio Worked

Operating under challenging circumstances; including prolonged rain, power outages, difficult access routes, and extended operational hours, our volunteers established and maintained communication links that bridged affected regions with coordination centres, ensuring that vital information continued to flow when it mattered most.
Their efforts were not only technical, but humanitarian; driven by a deep commitment to public service.
