In Memoriam: Vasanth Guruge (4S7VG) and Sadeepa Sepala (4S6SAD) – Honoring Two Great Stalwarts of the Amateur Radio Community

It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that we, the Radio Society of Sri Lanka (RSSL), announce the passing of two of our most cherished members – Vasanth Guruge (4S7VG) and Sadeepa Sepala (4S6SAD). These remarkable individuals left behind not only a lasting legacy in the world of amateur radio but also a profound impact on the people whose lives they touched. Their contributions to the RSSL and the broader amateur radio community were extraordinary, and their absence will be deeply felt.

Remembering Vasanth Guruge (4S7VG)

Vasanth Guruge (4S7VG) passed away on the afternoon of September 15, 2024. Vasanth was a true veteran of amateur radio, who had been an active DXer and contributor to the RSSL since the mid-1970s. His long-standing commitment to the hobby, as well as his technical expertise and generosity, made him a cornerstone of the Sri Lankan amateur radio community.

One of Vasanth’s most notable achievements was during the 1980 Moscow Olympics, a time when many international broadcasters refused to televise the games due to a political boycott. Vasanth ingeniously intercepted the broadcast using a Russian satellite and recorded the games. He then provided this footage to ITN, allowing Sri Lankans to witness the event—a feat that would have otherwise been impossible at the time.

Vasanth’s contributions did not stop there. He played a crucial role in setting up key repeater stations at Oliphant Estate- Nuwara Eliya, and Gongala- Deniyaya, improving communication across the country and enabling better connectivity for all Sri Lankan amateurs. His efforts to enhance infrastructure have left an enduring mark on the RSSL and the Sri Lankan amateur radio community.

As a two-time President of the RSSL (2005-2007 and 2015-2016), Vasanth’s leadership, commitment, and dedication were instrumental in shaping the society’s growth and progress. He was always willing to lend his time, knowledge, and resources, whether it was tuning duplexers or offering technical advice. Vasanth was not just a leader but a dear friend, mentor, and guiding force for many.

The news of his passing has left us heartbroken. His legacy of service, kindness, and dedication will forever be remembered. May he attain the Supreme Nibbana.

In Loving Memory of Sadeepa Sepala (4S6SAD)

On the same day, we were also met with the tragic news of the passing of Sadeepa Sepala (4S6SAD) on September 14, 2024. Sadeepa was a kind, soft-spoken, and incredibly generous person who continuously went above and beyond to help his fellow radio amateurs. His work in digital modes and APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System) was especially significant, advancing the hobby for many of us.

Sadeepa’s expertise extended far beyond radio communications. His vast knowledge of astronomy, antenna theory, and radio science was always shared with his fellow amateurs, students, and undergraduates. He took every opportunity to impart his wisdom to young minds, inspiring a new generation of radio enthusiasts. His tireless efforts to mentor and educate others are a testament to his passion and generosity of spirit.

Sadeepa was not only an active member but also a silent sponsor of several key projects that the RSSL undertook over the years. His professionalism, humility, and dedication earned him respect and admiration from all who had the privilege of knowing him.

His passing has left us all in shock. He was not only a talented and knowledgeable radio operator but also a true gentleman in every sense. Sadeepa’s quiet strength, selflessness, and contributions to both the RSSL and the wider amateur radio community will be greatly missed. May he attain Supreme Bliss of Nibbana.

A Legacy of Service and Passion

Both Vasanth Guruge (4S7VG) and Sadeepa Sepala (4S6SAD) exemplified the true spirit of amateur radio—fostering connection, sharing knowledge, and serving the community. Their work, both in leadership and behind the scenes, enriched the lives of everyone who crossed their paths. As we reflect on their contributions and the memories they left behind, we are reminded of the vital role they played in shaping the RSSL and elevating the amateur radio community in Sri Lanka.

Their unwavering commitment to amateur radio, technical innovation, and selfless service will continue to inspire future generations. While they are no longer with us, their legacies will live on through the countless lives they touched and the indelible mark they left on amateur radio in Sri Lanka.
